What is Cyber-Support?
Cyber-Support is the utilization of Internet technology to enhance the provision of services. This practice includes a variety of methods to obtain the support and encouragement that one may need. These include the use of e-mail, instant messaging, video conference, and/or forums, and can be combined with face-to-face meetings and telephone conferences. Cyber-Support services can include advocacy, case management, counseling, and support. Our Cyber-Support services are provided solely by professional social workers. Cyber-Support is not a replacement for face-to-face meetings with a professional or psychotherapy, but is an option to receiving the support that you may need. Our social workers do not provide formal therapy.
There are many reasons that an individual may pursue alternatives or supplements to in-person services. These include time restraints, anxiety, embarrassment, availability of services, just to name a few. Whether you are struggling with a personal issue, relationship, parenting, work-related issue, or any issue causing distress, Cyber-Support can help.
Is cyber-support appropriate and effective for everyone?
Unfortunately the answer is no. There are no guarantees to effectiveness and some individuals may not be appropriate to receive services over the internet. The first step to obtaining Cyber-Support services is an individual consultation and completion of a short questionnaire. This process will assist in determining if cyber-Support is a viable option for you. If initial consultation determines that Cyber-Support would not be in your best interest, you will be provided with suggestions as to how you may be able to obtain support services. Appropriateness and effectiveness of Cyber-Support services will be assessed on an ongoing basis with your social worker. If at anytime the social worker determines that you are in need of a higher level of services, they will discuss this with you and provide support in obtaining additional services. If your social worker questions the effectiveness of the support you are receiving, they will discuss this with you and together you will determine the direction of services.
Cyber-Support is not appropriate for crisis situations including suicidality, homicidality, serious mental health disorders, domestic violence, most drug and alcohol issues, and any issue that it is essential to have face-to-face meetings/therapy with a professional.
